"100% Cottone" is the debut album by bass player and composer Mauro Cottone, supported by Amarte Funds and released by ZenneZ Records.
It is a collection of 7 original pieces for a quartet formed by double bass, drums, piano/synths and guitar.
The recording is a result of the collaboration with many musicians from the Amsterdam jazz scene (see credits).
Mauro has built a repertoire of original songs, thus fulfilling the need to express his musical identity beyond his work as a sideman.
100% Cottone is a crossover instrumental project, where jazz improvisation is mixed with elements of electronic music, indie rock and hip hop grooves.
In that sense it reminds of the transgressive approach of the Bad Plus and the innovative productions of bass player and producer Petter Eldh, while the melodic song-like compositions are rooted in the alternative songwriters world.
Mauro’s voice on the double bass, especially influenced by bass players Charlie Haden and Larry Grenadier, finds a protagonist role in most of the pieces.
Danceable drum grooves and singable but unpredictable melodies are developed into virtuosic improvisations by some of the best young jazz musicians on the international Amsterdam scene.
Acoustic traditional instruments such as piano and double bass meet synthesizers and dreamy electric guitars, resulting in a unique direct sound.
Mauro obtained the Bachelor and Master degree in Jazz Double Bass at the CvA, and he is an established player in the dutch and italian jazz scene. He performed and/or recorded with musicians such as Peter Bernstein, Ben van Gelder, Ben Wendel, Mario Biondi, Francesco Cafiso, Francesco Ciniglio and he recorded more than 10 albums.
